Generative AI in design process
My thoughts on AI
-
It can significantly speed up the work of the designers, but it cannot generate effective, targeted solutions that grow out of the careful examination of design problem and an often messy and unpredictable creative process.
-
It helps designers to brainstorm and quickly test ideas at the early stages of the design process. It acts as a source of inspiration and a collaborator for idea exchange. It can also provide a starting point or help to fine-tune existing ideas.
-
It opens new possibilities for creative expression and democratizes creative areas, such as image production, previously available only to artists. With generative AI, more people can bring their ideas to life.
-
In today's world, where anyone can create a design with a simple prompt, the true skill lies in recognizing good design. This might be a matter of taste or judgment, but only those professionals who have honed their design skills can distinguish the good from the mediocre.
Designing AI features
A non-exhaustive list of things I learned while designing AI-based features.
It all starts with user goals and behaviors. Selecting the appropriate tasks for AI enhancement is crucial for sophisticated and successful design solutions.
Introduce AI into your designs in a noticeable way, but do not overhaul the primary user workflow to an AI feature. Strive for a harmonious balance, recognizing that not every user may be eager to embrace AI features.
Always be transparent with users about what the AI is doing and how they can modify the outcomes. Users need to retain control over the final results, even when AI is involved.
Familiarize yourself with the strengths and limitations of the AI technology you are designing for. Effective feature design relies on this knowledge, as subpar AI performance can quickly diminish user trust and result in lost opportunities.
In enterprise products or when dealing with sensitive data, it's crucial to ensure users are well-informed about their data usage and the implications of AI tools. Show users how to use AI tools responsibly.
